How we score sustainability

Every piece at GHAR carries a sustainability score out of 100. It tells you how much good came from choosing this piece over buying new.

GHAR Studio scores each piece against the five measures below. The less new work a piece needed to reach you, the higher it scores.

Five things we look at

Circularity 30 Materials 20 Production 20 Sourcing 20 Longevity 10

Circularity 30 points: How much of the original piece was kept. A piece kept whole scores highest; new stock that would otherwise be written off scores in the middle; a newly made piece starts at zero here.
Materials 20 points: What it is made from. Reclaimed and certified materials score highest, conventional materials lower.
Production 20 points: How it was restored or made: finishes, energy and waste. A piece that needed no new work scores well here.
Sourcing 20 points: How far it travelled to reach our showroom in Sandton. Local scores highest, imported lowest.
Longevity 10 points: How long it is built to last: durability, whether it can be repaired, and whether the design will date.

Every piece is scored by where it came from. Where a piece is better or worse than its group, for example a rug made close to home, we adjust its score individually.
